Skegness Pier Club Match 16 - The A Smith Cup.
Skegness Pier Club fished their latest match at Marsh Yard Moggs on Saturday evening in calm seas and warm overcast conditions. Seven anglers fished competing for the A Smith Cup and like the previous match the fishing was poor however even with only half the usual turnout some fish were caught.
Ian Nelson travelled down from Grimsby and won the match with a nice hound early on backed up by a flounder on fresh dug yellowtails and a weever for a total length of 142cm. Ian also picked up both the longest flatfish prize and the longest round fish prizes for these fish. Ian had the 99cm hound fishing a small frozen crab/ squid wrap fished on a mini penel rig with a circle hook on two snood clipped down rig at distance. The third single hook being baited with yellowtail lug, and this picked up the flounder on the next cast.
Russell Parsons came in second with a decent hound of 90cm on fresh peeler crab at range using his new Zulcron GT-X14 and Daiwa Basia reel, fishing at range with light mono. Both hounds were again caught early in the match and then not another bite from them for the rest of the match.
John Spalton fished small hooks targeting small fish and caught a small pin whiting and a weever for a total length of 29cm and third place. Later in the match John tried for a hound but with no luck.
Tony Dunk caught the only other fish of the match with a weever on fresh ragworm but Kieran Brown, Andrew Brown and Mark Bradbury not finding a single fish. Although Andrew and Kieren had swimmers in their pegs for a period of the match on an otherwise deserted beach making fishing even harder close in and casting any distance impossible due to safety.
The next match is at Trunch lane on Saturday September 2nd fishing the flood from 17:00 to 21:00 up to high water.
